The two-day festival will bring together some of the world’s most renowned artists as well as a raft of local acts across a multitude of genres whilst still having its core ethos firmly grounded in blues and roots based music. Over thirty artists on two stages over the two days will launch GrassRoots – The New Zealand Blues and Roots All Music Festival 2011.

GrassRoots proudly brings to you a string of international artists who will be making their one-off exclusive performance in New Zealand over these two very special days. The Blues Room#247 Keepin' It Real!

R&B legend Solomon Burke, considered by many to be the greatest soul singer of his generation, passed away on Sunday morning, October 10, 2010 of natural causes. Burke was 70 years old and en route from Los Angeles to Amsterdam for a sold out performance.

Signing with Atlantic Records in 1960, Burke recorded a string of Top Ten R&B chart hits, and helped write the book for modern soul with hit songs like "Cry To Me," "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," "If You Need Me," and "Tonight's The Night."

Burke released his latest album, Nothing's Impossible, in early 2010. Recorded in Memphis with the legendary producer Willie Mitchell (known for his work with Al Green), the album won Burke universal critical acclaim. The patriarch of a large extended family, Burke is survived by 21 children, 90 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Symphonicity: The Critically-Acclaimed World Tour comes to NZ

STING

Symphonicity: The Critically-Acclaimed World Tour
Extends To Australia and New Zealand

Sting Performing his Greatest Hits, Re-imagined for Symphonic Arrangement
Conducted by Steven Mercurio

Performances Confirmed in Perth, Barossa Valley, Melbourne, Sydney, Hunter Valley, Brisbane and Christchurch.

LIVE NATION is pleased to announce that STING will extend his critically-acclaimed world tour, Symphonicity, to Australia and New Zealand in January and February, 2011.

The Australian tour will begin January 22 in Perth (Sandalford Estate) followed by performances in the Barossa Valley and Melbourne (Music Bowl), with an additional two-night engagement at the renowned Sydney Opera House. The tour will also make stops at the Hope Estate Winery in Hunter Valley and the Brisbane River Stage before continuing to New Zealand, where Sting will perform at the CBS Canterbury Arena in Christchurch, before concluding at the already sold-out Mission Estate Winery, on February 12 in Napier Valley.

Following sold-out performances throughout North America and Europe, Symphonicity finds Sting performing his greatest hits, re-imagined for symphonic arrangement, conducted by Maestro Steven Mercurio (Pavarotti, Bocelli). For this portion of the tour, Symphonicity will feature the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Perth, Barossa Valley and Melbourne, the Sydney Symphony in Sydney, Brisbane and Hunter Valley, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra performing in Christchurch and Napier, NZ.

Sting will also be joined by a group of accomplished musicians, comprised of Dominic Miller (Sting’s longtime guitarist), Rhani Krija (Sting’s longtime multi-genre percussionist), David Cossin (a multi-percussion specialist in new and experimental music and featured member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars), Jo Lawry (Australian vocalist) and Ira Coleman (bassist).

“I am looking forward to performing in Australia and New Zealand, having a whole new palate of musical colors to work with and reinventing the songs that have been the staples of my live shows for over thirty years,” says Sting.

Drawing from a diverse and illustrious career that has produced numerous multi-platinum albums, a staggering list of number one songs, countless accolades and worldwide record sales of nearly 100 million, Sting’s most celebrated songs have been re-interpreted with brand new orchestrations arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, David Hartley, Michel Legrand, Rob Mathes, Vince Mendoza, Steven Mercurio, Bill Ross, Robert Sadin, and Nicola Tescari.

Selections, created especially for this tour, will include fan-favorites such as The Police hits “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, “Roxanne”, “Next To You” and “Every Breath You Take,” to notable songs from Sting’s enduring solo career – “Englishman In New York,” “Fragile,” “Russians,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You,” “Fields Of Gold,” and “Desert Rose.”

To accompany Sting’s celebrated world tour, Deutsche Grammophon/CherryTree Records, recently announced a live CD/DVD package, Live in Berlin, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Steven Mercurio, available internationally on November 26, 2010. This exclusive collection features previously unreleased material and many of his greatest hits, such as “Roxanne,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” “King Of Pain,” “Fields Of Gold,” and more, all re-imagined for symphonic arrangement. Featuring special guest Branford Marsalis on select tracks, this live concert experience is quintessential Symphonicity!

Deutsche Grammophon/CherryTree Records also released a companion studio album, Symphonicities, to critical acclaim. Highlights include fan-favorites culled from The Police songbook such as “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, “Roxanne” and “Next To You,” as well as songs from Sting’s solo career including “Englishman In New York,” “I Burn for You,” “Why Should I Cry for You” and “She’s Too Good For Me,” among many others.

Sting’s first venture into the classical realm began with the success of his #1 album Songs from the Labyrinth, a lute-based interpretation of the music of 16th century composer John Dowland, released in 2006 on Deutsche Grammophon. After completing the enormously successful Police reunion world tour, Sting returned to pursue his passion for combining musical genres with his most recent release If On A Winter’s Night... which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s classical chart.

Prior to starting his solo career, Sting was the principal songwriter, lead singer and bassist of the rock band The Police. As a solo musician and member of The Police, Sting has received 16 Grammy Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. He is also a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“We are thrilled to be a part of bringing this exciting and unique tour with Sting to the world,” said Arthur Fogel (CEO/ Chairman Live Nation global Touring). “The arrangements, combined with Sting’s brilliant songwriting and musicianship, will no doubt result in a magical evening of music.”

The world tour is promoted by Live Nation and produced by RZO Entertainment, Inc. in association with Universal Music Classical Management & Productions.

The Blues Room# 246 Puttin some Funk in Your Blues

Charles Big Daddy Stallings

The Blues Room presents ...
PUTTING SOME FUNK INTO YOUR BLUES
Episode 246, 6 September

Charles 'Big Daddy' Stallings
Blues Party
Tai Jeria Record Company / Synquesse Music

Third album by Charles 'Big Daddy' Stallings 'Blues Party' lives up to its name without a doubt! Born in Columbia, South Carolina, and getting raised on a farm in Hobbsville, North Carolina, Big Daddy was honing his guitar playing and vocals from an early age by first learning Big Boss Man by Jimmy Reed. He has since released outstanding albums of 'good time blues with a twist' and shared the stage with The Holmes Brothers, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Mark Hummel and Candye Kane to name a few.

Blues Party brings elements of funk, soul, and blues together with some latin influences, plenty of tasty horn sections including fine Mississippi saxaphone, and a whole lotta heart. Big Daddy’s vocals are excellent, husky at times and at other times as smooth as silk. There’s obvious influences from some of the greats like BB King, James Brown, and Muddy Waters here but what I like most is Big Daddy’s own personality and great sense of humour that shines through on songs like Old Folks, and Doggone Shame. Blues Party gets 4 out of 5 thumbs up from me. Good time blues with a twist!

Blues September Showdown, Viligrad Winery featuring Darcy Perry

Blue September Showdown! Vilagrad Winery 2010. A fundraiser organised by blues guitarist Darcy Perry, who gathered an impressive lineup of blues and roots musicians all donating their time to raise awareness for prostate cancer. It was a full house with guests all painting their faces blue for the evening in support of the cause.

Blue September is the annual awareness campaign launched by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand to draw attention to prostate cancer in New Zealand - one of the biggest killers of New Zealand men. It is estimated that at least half of the 600 annual deaths from prostate cancer could have been prevented had the cancer been diagnosed and treated early enough.

Spokesperson for Blue September, Darcy Perry, said, "Men are dying quietly in New Zealand. Cancer took the lives of both my dad and my father in-law. Men need to start taking action, talking to their doctors and taking better care of their health." Mr Perry said that he hoped if anything was to come out of the evening, it would be that it would result in a man somewhere having his life saved through early detection.

The line-up for the evening was diverse, from solo acoustic acts to lively electric blues bands, with every person appearing on stage painting their face blue to support prostate cancer awareness. Artists included Darcy Perry, Regan, Pete Fountain, Ashley Knox, Rachel Hope, Faith Miru, The Flaming Mudcats, The Gunsmiths, Andre Ngapo, Three's A Crowd, and Nate Taiapa.

Oli Brown (Ruf Records) will play Biddy Mulligans, Hamilton

Due to unprecedented demand Oli Brown, the young guitarist that Mojo Magazine described as “The hottest young pistol in British blues”, has announced two further special performances following his gigs at Gtaranaki 2010. They are:
The Ruby Lounge
14 Bond St, Wellington
15th August at 9:00pm

and
Biddy Mulligan’s Back Bar
742 Victoria St
Hamilton
16th August at 8:00pm

Barely out of his teens, Oli Brown is being hailed as the great white hope of British blues, with glowing reviews for his live and recorded work. Uncut magazine describes his guitar-
playing as a cross between Rory Gallagher and Steve Cropper.

Since 2007 the Oli Brown Band has playing up and down the UK. A major highlight for 2007 was recording a live session for BBC Radio 2 for the Paul Jones Blues Show which was
transmitted 14 May 2007. Other notable events that year included supporting acts like Walter Trout, Aynsley Lister, Devon Allman and Ian Parker, as well as performances for
various local radio stations.

YELLOW EYE LTD PRESS RELEASE:BRITISH BLUES SENSATION OLI BROWN ANNOUNCES 2 EXTRA GIGS FOLLOWING HIS APPERANCES AT GTARANAKI 2010
2008 was exciting and extremely busy: In January Oli signed to Ruf Records and went to Germany to record his first Ruf Records album, titled Open Road, released that June to great reviews.

In February 2008, whilst in America, The Oli Brown Band were invited to record at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, by John Fry himself (Ardent Studios have been involved with the recording of albums by artists such as REM, The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, Isaac Hayes, ZZ Top… the list goes on and on). Oli and the band recorded a couple of tracks and then performed a live session for "The Ardent Sessions". The hits on the website for The Oli
Brown Band set exceeded 1.4 million in three weeks.

Oli went back to the States in August 2008, where he performed with Blinddog Smokin, Sherman Robertson, Miss Blues, Billy Branch - and did his own Oli Brown set too!
The Oli Brown Band secured support slots in 2008 with artist such as Jon Cleary, Johnny Winter, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robben Ford, Walter Trout and Devon Allman, as well as having Oli Brown Band headline gigs. All of the gigs saw them playing in larger venues and increasing their rapidly growing fan base.

Early 2009 saw Oli perform as a member of the legendary Blues Caravan Tour of Europe, an annual event put on by Ruf Records which visits many countries including Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, Lithuania and Poland. 2009 was also when The Oli Brown Band carried out their first major UK tour. This was the Open Road Tour, presented by HMV in association with Rhino Agency and was a great success.

The rest of 2009 had the band performing at various festivals both in and out of the UK and ended, following requests from fans, with a further UK tour.
The eagerly awaited follow up to Oli Brown's critically acclaimed debut Open Road is Heads I win, Tails You Lose and features that unique Oli Brown sound; clean guitar, great riffs and a vocal honed by two years of touring that squeezes every emotion from the lyrics. This album was produced by the legendary Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac,
Eric Clapton, Ten Years After), who was keen to come out of retirement to work with the talented Oli after hearing his debut CD. With the blues baton now firmly grasped in Oli's hands, he's just completed his biggest gig yet with two appearances at Glastonbury on 25 and 26 June 2010.
His appearances at one of the world's biggest music festivals cements his place as a rising star and comes in the middle of a hectic 2010 for Oli, who lives at home with his dad and manager Graham, mum Sue and sister Charlotte, 23.
Oli is available for interviews and both his albums can be provided for review.

Delta Groove Productions is a labor of love, and culmination of a lifelong obsession with blues and roots music on the part of celebrated producer and successful entrepreneur Rand Chortkoff. Each project is undertaken with the idea that quality speaks for itself, so the utmost care is given to every detail, from A&R to production to packaging to promotion - but first and foremost, the performances. Delta Groove is all about the music. Without great performers and great performances, nothing else matters.

The creative force behind the music arm of Delta Groove Productions is Randy Chortkoff, a veteran producer of blues and roots recordings and a talented musician in his own right. Beginning in the 1980s, Chortkoff first honed his studio skills working with his own band, The Dirt Cheap Blues Band (which also featured future blues heavy-hitters Debbie Davies and Alex Shultz) before taking the plunge into independent record production by recording blues legend Billy Boy Arnold. These master tapes were leased by the world's largest independent blues label, the prestigious Alligator Records, and were released as Arnold's highly acclaimed 'comeback' release "Back Where I Belong" in the early 1990s.

Over the next several years Chortkoff produced his own sessions featuring a number of prominent blues artists, including the late King Ernest, powerhouse vocalist Finis Tasby, and others, leasing them to major blues labels in the US and in Europe. Finally deciding to reap the fruits of his own labors, Chortkoff has created the Delta Groove Productions record label.

In a relatively short period of time, Delta Groove has already made a BIG splash in the roots and blues music industry, with world-wide radio airplay, glowing reviews in both the specialist and general press, and this year has garnered an impressive 9 Blues Music Awards nominations, the equivalent of a Grammy in the blues music world. Delta Groove Productions has quickly earned a well-deserved reputation as the leader in roots and blues music, and the best is yet to come.

Back in 1971, Bruce Iglauer, a 23-year-old blues fan, used his meager savings to record and produce his favorite band, Hound Dog Taylor & the HouseRockers. Following his heart, he quit his day job with Delmark Records and began promoting Hound Dog Taylor and his new record company full-time. Over 30 years later, that company, Alligator Records, is home to some of the world's premier blues and roots rock talent and is regarded by fans and the media alike as the top contemporary blues record label in the world.
