The Blues Room (462) :: Another Hour Of Blues Power With Darcy Perry

The Blues Room, 3 December 2014
Episode #462

Darcy Perry needs applauding. He did this whole show by himself without me by his side as I typically am each time he goes live to air - I was in the neighboring studio prerecording an interview for another show. Considering how tricky it can be to do live to air phone interviews, Darcy pulled it off brilliantly. Well done Super Blues Man! That picture above of Darcy was taken at his live to air performance with his band, hear the full episode here

Kokomo is made up of six musicians, stalwarts of New Zealand's Bay Of Plenty music scene, and each individually accomplished. They have just released their tenth studio album called Bigger Than Brando. Influenced by classic artists such as Bob Dylan and Guy Clark, as well as a host of legendary bluesmen, band leader, Derek Jacombs, wrote all ten songs. His songwriting crosses boundaries to create an unusal New Zealand brand of bluesy alt country.

Darcy Perry catches up with Derek in this episode of The Blues Room to talk all about the new album and Kokomo's show this Friday 5th December at Hamilton's Nivara Lounge.

The Blues Room, 1 October 2014
Episode #453

This week in The Blues Room Darcy Perry interviews blues rocker John Williams. Beginning his career at an early age in New Zealand, John made his mark here and in Australia with Larry's Rebels, The Rebels and King Harvest. He has also been the guitarist for The Platters, Roy Orbison and John Rowles, as well as touring with The Yardbirds, Tom Jones, Eric Burdon, The Walker Bros, Roy Orbison, The Animals, The Easybeats and the one and only Jimmy Page. John Williams is the only guitarist ever to fill in live on stage for the guitar legend.

Currently playing with his bands Double Shot of Blues and Retro Boys, Williams is known for his jaw-dropping guitar licks, scorching slide-guitar and rocking powerhouse style of blues.

Darcy plays some tracks from John's latest CD/DVD, 12 Bars of Live Blues. Darcy gave away a free copy on air, congratulations Will Adams!

The Blues Room #451 :: A Tribute To Muddy Waters From His Son

The Blues Room, 17 September 2014
Episode #451

One of Muddy Waters son's, Mud Morganfield, has teamed up with harmonica legend, Kim Wilson to pay tribute to Muddy Waters - Mud's father! The result is a superb 14 track album of some of Muddy's great tunes. I spin a few tracks from the album here and finish with a very cool modern remix of Mannish Boy. I always wonder what could have been with some of these vintage artists had they lived long enough to collaborate with some of today's modern beat masters. One can only wonder.

Hear an interview with Mud and Kim at NPR.

Joe Bonamassa Rocked Auckland Town Hall

Credit: Joe Bonamassa (12 Sept 14, Auckland, NZ)
Joe Bonamassa came to play a concert in the Auckland town hall last Friday, it was his first time in New Zealand and I have to say - he rocked!!!! He opened with an acoustic set then rocked it out electric. The place was packed, the sound was loud, and the night was magic!

I wasn't going to go (being a music lover one has to pick and choose which concerts to go to as it can get pretty expensive) but when a friend offered me a ride I jumped to the opportunity. I'm glad I did! When I got to the venue I needed to purchase my ticket so I left my place in line (I could hear Joe starting up his acoustic set!!) and literally ran to the ticket sales booth. I presenting my credit card and said I needed to purchase a ticket. A sales person asked me if I was there to buy a ticket or pick up a ticket. I said to buy a ticket. She held up a ticket that some one didn't need as their friend had not been able to make it last minute, and she asked if I'd like the ticket, for free! Well hell yeah, YES PLEASE! I thanked them and went in to the concert. The door person looked at my ticket and excitedly said, 'you got the free ticket!' She told me that the person who gave up the ticket would be sitting on my right.

What a pleasure it was to meet Wayne Alexander of Dunedin, Unfortunately I had no cash to give him in return for the ticket but posting him some blues-rock CDs might be a small way to say 'thank you'! I'm so glad I went to see Joe Bonamassa!!!! Heres a highlight clip I took, not only was Joe's guitar and singing tops, his drummer and percussionist were boss!!!

The Blues Room #449 :: Another Hour Of Blues Power With Darcy Perry

The Blues Room, 03 September 2014
Episode #449

Darcy Perry selects another great sample of blues from around the world and over the spans of time. Darcy is a strong advocate for Blue September, the annual Prostate Cancer Foundation's national awareness campaign.

Every year around 600 men die in New Zealand of prostate cancer. That is more than 600 fathers, sons, brothers, grandfathers - gone! This happens because men don’t know how dangerous the disease is, they don’t talk to their doctor about it, they simply don’t do anything about it. This has to stop. Prostate cancer can be prevented if detected early enough.

That’s why Blue September is about getting the word out about prostate cancer. If you buy a blue ribbon, paint your face blue, donate money to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or even tell people, you will be directly helping to lower the death rate and reduce the suffering from this disease.

The Blues Room # 437 : : Blues Overdose

The Blues Room, 11 June 2014
Episode # 437

Blues Blast Magazine has a monthly feature called the “Blues Overdose” issue with 5 or 6 free downloadable tracks from various artists to help promote their releases.

This is their answer to the print magazine’s free CD samplers given away when you buy a subscription. Difference is they are going to give them away for 30 days as free downloads to their magazine subscribers. (Their magazine is free too!)

A month after publication date they take the track down so no one can download it after that and artists retain all rights to the track. This will help introduce more fans to the new CD to generate more sales.

So bottom line, if you have an original track off your new album that you own the publishing rights on, submit it for consideration in their monthly Blues Overdose issue.

The Blues Overdose issue will be the last issue of each month so the next one will be the last Thursday of this month. They need you to select the track and send it to them in mp3 format at least a week before to be included. They also need the cover art and 2 paragraphs of text promoting the CD/song that you want to include on the download page. Here is a link to a sample expired Blues OD page for an example of what we are looking for: http://www.bluesblastmagazine.com/blues-od-sample/
You can send the tracks, cover art and information to info@bluesblastmagazine.com.
Please contact info@BluesBlastMagazine.com or at 309 267-4425 if you would like more information.
Songs marked with a * in the playlist below are from the May 2014 Blues Blast Overdose issue.

FREE DOWNLOAD: Saint Hilda's Faithless Boy by Darren Watson

Darren Watson is calling out for support to finish his new album . . .

Please visit www.pledgeme.co.nz/2080, make a pledge in NZ dollars and select one of the awesome rewards.

In the meantime you can download Darren's last album for as little as FREE

Enjoy. And please spread the word.

Prestigious US magazine Blues Revue says:
"New Zealand's Darren Watson has crafted a beautiful album in Saint Hilda's Faithless Boy (Red Rocks Records), a set of backward-looking (but by no means retro) blues recorded with a bracing, contemporary sonic treatment. Watson pops his guitar strings like Johnny 'Guitar' Watson on She Got It All, mines soulful, Robert Cray territory on Love Is An Ocean, and channels Howlin' Wolf in full, stomping intensity on A Desperate Man. Dig the swampy roots-rocker He Don't Love You, the serpentine The Bitter Suite, and the acoustic slide reading of My Love Will Never Die - leagues from Otis Rush's original stylistically, right there emotionally. Watson's hearty vocal approach sounds utterly honest. The supporting cast is superb."

"Saint Hilda's Faithless Boy gets better each time I listen to it."
- Bill Mitchell, Blues Bytes, USA

"This is world class. We are lucky to have him. More people should know that."
- Simon Sweetman, Dominion Post

"A strong, and long overdue album."
- Graeme Reid, elsewhere.co.nz

"...the quality of his songwriting and the easy assertiveness of the performances convince."

The show will offer two entirely new and exciting band line-ups with Bonamassa essentially opening for himself. The first set will feature Bonamassa alongside the acoustic band from his #1 Billboard acoustic CD/DVD An Acoustic Evening At The Vienna Opera House playing an assortment of rare, vintage, organic and “oddball” instruments alongside performers Gerry O’Connor, Mats Wester, and Lenny Castro. Together they will run through an hour of the signature acoustic performance from Bonamassa’s Vienna show, treating the audience to a gorgeously textured unplugged experience. Bonamassa will then shift into electric mode for the second half of the show featuring his regular touring band: Carmine Rojas (bass), Tal Bergman (drums), and new touring keyboardist (and fellow Black Country Communion member) Derek Sherinian. Recent kudos for Bonamassa include his very first Grammy nomination for Best Blues Album, his twelfth #1 Billboard Blues Album (more than any other artist), and his DVD Joe Bonamassa: Live At The Royal Albert Hall, featuring Eric Clapton joining him onstage, earning platinum status.

Little Walter, 1967 (photo credit)

The Blues Room, 30 April 2014
Episode # 432

Without a doubt Little Walter is the world's undisputed heavyweight of blues harmonica, period. He's had more novices and advanced professionals envying his harmonica playing since he caused the price of harmonicas to double in price after he recorded that great instrumental, Juke, back in 1952.

In this episode we pay tribute to Little Walter and wish him a Happy Birthday, he would have turned 84 years old on 1 May 2014 (if he hadn't been fighting!) Here you'll hear some modern masters interpreting some great tunes by Little Walter. We just keep lovin' him!
