New Blues Release From Ronnie Shellist and Friends:: "hangover blues vol.1"

On his last trip out to Chicago, Ronnie Shellist not only got to play some fabulous shows with some amazing players, but he recorded some live songs in Gerry Hundt's home studio. This release, "hangover blues, vol. 1", truly captures the spirit of traditional, yet modern, fresh blues. Of the album, Jerry says:

"I am very proud of the tunes. There are 8 tracks in all, 5 of which all four of us played on, and 3 acoustic tracks with just Gerry Hundt and I. The guys on this recording, are the same fellas that I worked with on all of the shows back in March 2015".

This release has Gerry Hundt on vocals, guitar, bass, Andy Duncanson (from Kilborn Alley) on vocals/guitar/bass, Ed Kobek on drums. and yours truly on harmonica. I am very pleased to share this with all of you! Hope you enjoy.

The Blues Room, 26 August 2015
Episode #500

Well here it is Bluesville! Episode 500! Its only taken about 10 years to get here but here we are and what a great time we've had along the way. Joining me in The Blues Room for the 500th episode were The Swamp Dogz featuring John Maydon (gtr, vocs), Mark Kneebone (bass, bk-vocs), Paul Alderton (drums, bk-vocs), & Clara Lange (viol in, vocs) were our backing band. We had special guests Darcy Perry and Max Mac Donald join us too, and Kev from the Eastside was my right hand man on the DJ duties. We played classic blues vinyl courtesy of Ivan of Nivara Lounge and extended our one hour show to two hours.

We set up the band in the foyer of the station and broadcast the show live to air, you'll see this in some of the video clips included here. We had Derek Jacombs and Graham Clark call in congratulations and others sent in prerecorded congratulations from around the globe.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Free FM's manager, Phil Grey, for all hes done to support The Blues Room over the years, hes been so generous and accommodating and we couldn't have gotten here without him. All the staff at Free FM for all their support and hard work. To all the guests who have come into the studio or on air from around the globe, thank you! To all our sponsors, especially, The Hamilton Blues Society, all those artists, bands, record companies, music distributors, music promoters, friends, and my family (especially my wife), I thank you all. To the fans of 'The Blues' who tune in each week or who get the podcast, thank you so much for your support and encouragement. #499 Laura Collins Interview

The Blues Room, 19 August 2015
Episode #499

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band play Hamilton's Nivara Lounge tonight (20th August), they'll be delivering their back porch blend of acoustic blues.

You can expect to hear a little BB, a little Koko, some Muddy Waters and many more with soulful vocals, sweet guitar solos, honky tonk style piano, warm upright bass and percussive drums.

The Back Porch Boys are all journeymen who have played many juke joints in their time. One of those talents is Wayne Mason, a well-known Kiwi songwriter in his other life, also one hell of a stonkin’ boogie blues piano player. So look out for 'Mad Professor' style wild solos with a wonderful sense of abandon. John O'Connor on guitar has worked with many of New Zealand’s well-known musicians and is considered one of New Zealand’s guitar legends. He has played and recorded with many well known artists including the NZSO, Kiri Te Kanawa, Mark Williams, Ron Goodwin, BB King, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. In the engine room George Barris (long time NZ player, of early fame in the band 'Highway') on mellow upright bass and Pete Cogswell on Back Porch Drums.

In this episode we interview Laura and spin a few of her awesome tracks plus some tracks from Ann Cole, Bonnie Raitt, Lloyd Spiegel, King Leo, Luke Burnsright, C.W. Stoneking and more!! Enjoy!

1. Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band - Crazy Love

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band at Nivara Lounge

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band,
Thursday 20th August, Nivara Lounge, Hamilton,
show starts 8.00pm, $20 on the door.

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are heading to the Nivara Lounge in Hamilton on Thursday 20th August ready to 'rock the joint'. Laura Collins, known for her soulful vocal delivery, on-stage energy and emphasis on entertainment says “I’m all about putting on a show. I’m lucky enough to be playing with some men who are huge talents, they've all played many a juke joint in their time".

Laura says having a more acoustic rhythm section allows the band to stay at an easy volume “It doesn’t need to be loud to groove, this is a vocals led band and I’m all about finding the heart of the song. We’re about keeping it mellow, easy on the ears, but we’ll still make you want to dance. I'm ready to celebrate Summer and I'm bringing my favourite bluesmen and I know they will make the house jump."

You can expect a little Etta James, some Bonnie Raitt, some Muddy Waters and many more favourites, a whole lot of cheek, some fine playing and a good old southern time on the back porch.

Quote from Review from Manawatu Standard June 2nd, 2014
"The Back Porch Band had a great feel about it ranging from solidly funky to gloriously gospel, their backing vocals superbly supporting this sassy songstress. With each number given a highly original blues sound, this band fairly rocked the joint..."

Hopetoun Brown Are Coming To Town

By day they're the Supergroove horn section.
By night they stalk the streets, their antique wind instruments shrieking wildly.

Often playing without amplification the pair measure each bar like a lumberjack aims his axe. Nick Atkinson's big clarinet supports Tim Stewart's heavy trumpet tone, a sound hefty enough to bend a bough. Boots stomp and the crowd hollers as Stewart's powerful voice soulfully bellows out hits like Demanding Blues and Road Runner Rocks. Join the pair on tour through out New Zealand during June/July 2015.

If you've ever seen Supergroove perform you may have noticed the bouncing horn section of Tim Stewart and Nick Atkinson. The pair have recently formed a band called Hopetoun Brown which revolves around Tim's big soulful voice coupled to the deep tones of Nick's bass clarinet.

Back in their school days Nick and Tim fell in love with the unique sounds of New Orleans after seeing The Dirty Dozen Brass Band march down Queen Street. "It was the rhythms that drew you in" reflects Tim who goes on at length about the large amounts of stone-cold funk pouring from the assorted horns that fateful day. Since then they've worked on their chops sharpening their skills on that classic Southern repertoire, but late last year something happened that changed their sound. Tim started to sing that Big Easy classic Saint James Infirmary. When the bass clarinet picked out the bass-line Hopetoun Brown was born. "There's such a natural balance between Tim's voice and sound of the low clarinet" says Nick. "They're very complementary, almost complete."
Since then they've been gigging around central Auckland haunts like the Portland Public House, Golden Dawn, The Wine Cellar and the Leigh Sawmill where they were able to do an extra late session out by the briar recently. "Once we got stomping there was gravel flying everywhere" says Tim gleefully.
