#538 :: LIVE BLUES RECORDING :: The Allman Brothers Band LIVE (1971)

The Blues Room, 25 May 2016
Episode #538

LIVE BLUES RECORDING
We will bring you a live blues recording on the last week of each month and you're more than welcome to message us any recommendations. You'll want to turn this one up, its awesome!

The Allman Brothers Band – Live From A&R Studios: New York, August 26, 1971
The Allman Brothers Band have released a vintage live album recorded at A&R Studios in New York City in 1971. The set features the original line up of the band and marks the final NYC performance from the late Duane Allman. The live radio broadcast, which originally aired on WPLJ, features the band steamrolling through a set of songs and its smokin' from start to finish. The recording was widely bootlegged, but has been remixed from the original multi-track recording.

It features ABB’s original line up: Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks. It marks the last NYC performance of guitarist Duane Allman, who died eight weeks later in a motorcycle accident on Oct. 2, 1971 at the age of 24.

One stand out moment of the recording is a tribute to the late-King Curtis. The R&B saxophonist was murdered on his New York doorstep just two weeks before the Allmans’ broadcast. The band honored the legend by performing an epic 19-plus-minute medley of Willie Cobb’s “You Don’t Love Me” and Curtis’ 1964 instrumental “Soul Serenade.”

Drummer and co-founder Butch Trucks shared his memories of that live broadcast with Rolling Stone. He said, “We were set up in that studio just like we did on stage. But it was better. Rather than having their backs to me, the front line – Duane, Dickey and Berry – was facing us in kind of a semi-circle, which made it even easier to communicate. When I play, I stare at the left hand of whoever is playing lead. And I get to know what people are playing well enough that when they start going somewhere, once they arrive, I’m already there.”

#534 :: John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Live In 1967 - Vol Two

The Blues Room, 27 April 2016
Episode #534

John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers: Live in 1967 – Volume Two
Available Worldwide on Friday 6th May 20

Following the huge critical and commercial success of 2015’s John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers ‘Live in 1967’, Forty Below Records is pleased to announce the release of a second volume of live material from the legendary short-lived Bluesbreakers line-up of John Mayall (vocals, keyboards, harmonica), Peter Green (lead guitar), John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums).

Volume Two showcases three John Mayall self-penned tracks; the opening song, all-time blues classic ‘Tears in My Eyes’, ‘Chicago Line’,featuring a John McVie bass solo and ‘Please Don’t Tell’, which is a great example of the power-blues that The Bluesbreakerswere renowned for.

JOHN MAYALL ON THE ALBUM:
“I am so happy that the remaining usable tracks from these London club dates have been released as a follow-up to the well received Volume One. Peter Green, as before, is on fire throughout and this set includes a great instrumental based on his composition ‘Greeny’. There area couple of Otis Rush tracks that were included on the first volume but they are from different venues and totally different. I couldn’t possibly let these slide. Also, there is another version of T-Bone Walker’s’Stormy Monday’ that is sung by American Serviceman Ronnie Jones, who was lead singer with a British soul band and, who would frequently sit in at our gigs. John McVie gets in a great bass solo on ‘Chicago Line’ and Mick Fleetwood drives the whole set with his unique and powerful drumming. With these new tracks added to the collection, it pretty much features all the material we had in our repertoire at that time and I’m very glad that you can now enjoy this great piece of rock/blues history”.

Heres a taste of what Vol Two has on offer, plus some of the outstanding tracks of Vol One.
1. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers - All Your Love [vol1]
2. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers - Have You Ever Loved A Woman [vol1]
