#618 :: Darcy Perry's Hour Of Blues Power :: Midge Marsden Spotlight (6 Dec 2017)

Keith Douglas "Midge" Marsden MNZM (born 1945) is a New Zealand blues and R&B guitarist, harmonica-player, and singer with a musical career spanning four decades. Marsden was born and brought up in New Plymouth, Taranaki, the son of Les and Elaine Marsden. His musical education started on the piano, and included singing in church, though his first musical love was rock and roll. As a teenager he took guitar lessons from a New Plymouth musician called Leo Davies, who also owned a recording studio in the town, and went on to further lessons with another musician, Johnny Williams.

Marsden's career spans four decades, and during that time he has played thousands of concerts in New Zealand and introduced several generations of New Zealanders to the blues. He was voted New Zealand Entertainer of the Year in 1990, and his 1991 album Burning Rain later went gold.

Marsden has toured the USA four times, and each time he has played with and befriended artists such as Little Willy Foster, Bobby Mack, Ronnie Taylor, and Australian Dave Boyle. He has encouraged all these artists to tour New Zealand, and thus broadened New Zealanders' appreciation of blues music. Marsden was a student at the University of Mississippi in 1996, from where he graduated with a Diploma in Southern Studies, and more recently he has tutored at Waikato Institute of Technology in "Bluesology".

In 2006 Marsden was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music.

Marsden was a friend of Stevie Ray Vaughan; upon living in Texas at various times he would stay at Vaughan's house for months on end. He toured with Vaughan a few times, playing harmonica and recorded a Europa petrol advert with Vaughan in 1987 (pictured above).

Here in this episode, Darcy Perry pays tribute to Midge Marsden. Enjoy!

#614 :: Tribute To Howling Wolf feat. Greaseland All-Stars (8 November 2017)

My good blues lovin' friend, Kevin Johnson, of Proud Papa Promotions & Publicity, used to work for Delmark Records in Chicago. Kevin now has his own independent radio promotions and press/publicity/PR company, concentrating on real deal blues! When he sent me a copy of 'Howlin' At Greaseland' (West Tone Records) I knew I'd be in for a good hit of solid blues. And I was right!

Howlin' At Greaseland is tribute to the legend Howlin' Wolf (Chester Arthur Burnett June 10, 1910 – January 10, 1976). Wolf is blues, there's no doubt about it. Several of his songs, including Smokestack Lightnin', Killing Floor and Spoonful, have become blues and blues rock standards the world over. On this album of 14 tracks, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer, Kid Anderson, brings together some of the most accomplished musicians this side of Wolf's life, to recreate and cover some of Wolf's most outstanding songs. It's not that Howlin' At Greaseland is trying to outdo or better Wolf's genius, rather it's paying homage to a true blues legend that I'm sure all the artists involved love and admire.

Produced by Andersen at Greaseland Studios, Howlin' At Greaseland features many great artists such as Rick Estrin, Johnny Cat, Tail Dragger, Rockin’ Johnny Burgin, Jim Pugh, Henry Gray (played piano for Wolf), Terry Hanck, Ali Kumar and many more.

There's some good banter and stories in between songs thanks to Anderson for keeping the tapes rollin. I just think the whole album is brilliant. It captures today's prmier West Coast and Chicago players very well. I highly recommend you pick yourself up a copy soon! I spin a few songs I like from Howlin' At Greaseland plus some other massive tracks that also pay tribute to the legend, Howlin' Wolf. Ahhhh whooooo, whooooo (*in the accent of Howlin' Wolf). Enjoy!

#608 :: LIVE Recording Wednesday :: Charles Bradley Tribute (Nov 5, 1948 – Sept 23, 2017)

This episode is dedicated to the 'Screaming Eagle Of Soul', the one and only Charles Edward Bradley (1948 – 2017). A soul icon, a rare talent, a beautiful man.
Charles Bradley was an American funk, soul, and R&B singer, signed to the Daptone Records label under the Dunham Records division. His performances and recording style were consistent with Daptone's revivalist approach, celebrating the feel of funk and soul music from the 1960s and 1970s. One review said he "echoes the evocative delivery of Otis Redding".

Bradley was the subject of the documentary, 'Soul of America', which premiered at South by Southwest in 2012. I totally recommend you see if, again, if you're already seen it.

Bradley died of stomach cancer in Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 68. He was surrounded by family and friends, including members of all the bands he worked closely with.

This is a two part episode. The first part was broadcast on The Blues Room, and the second part was broadcast on GO FEET! Radio. The songs selected for this tribute were mainly from LIVE performances on KEXP by Charles Bradley and his band.
