The Blues Room Reaches Its 400th Episode!

Episode 400, 18 September 2013

About 8 years ago I started The Blues Room with a passion to help keep the blues alive. 400 episodes later I still have the passion and I can say the blues most certainly is alive and well in Hamilton, New Zealand. Hosting a weekly radio show (or in my case 2 weekly shows!) comes with its challenges but it also has its rewards. Its been a mission getting myself organized and up into the Free FM studio by 8.45pm each Wednesday but to have someone text or phone the studio to ask, 'wow, who's that you're playing?' or to have someone let me know they appreciate turning on the radio to hear blues music has made it all worthwhile. 

I've met some truly awesome people along this journey, too many to thank all at once here but I couldn't have done it without them. Free FM 89.0 has been excellent in allowing me to broadcast my show, Phil Grey the manager has given me full support as have his team of staff. Many local musicians and overseas acts have provided their support and music, some have paid a visit to The Blues Room whether in person or via the phone by way of an interview, like Thomas Oliver in this episode. Darcy Perry has believed in me and been a blues mentor along the way. To all the blues lovers and listeners who have kept me going week in week out to bring you a weekly serving of fresh, cool blues, I just want to say thank you, thank you very very much!!

Darcy Perry: Blue September 2013 [#398]

My good friend Darcy Perry is in the studio with me to talk about Blue September - a prostate cancer awareness campaign - and about his new album called, Eleven Long Years. Darcy is releasing his entire back catalogue, including two previously unreleased live albums along with his new album thats been five years in the making. Albums will be available for pre-sale from August 23. The release date is Friday, September 6, with digital download/streaming on iTunes, Amazon, Amplifier, Deezer, Google Play, Rdio and Spotify. All proceeds from album sales go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Darcy has lost a father-in-law, a friend, and grandfather to cancer.

“It’s about getting the message out there that it’s OK to go to the doctor. Prostate cancer kills more than 550 men in New Zealand every year. Thousands more are diagnosed – many of them far too late. By going and getting a check-up from the age of 40, you are not only taking responsibility for your own health, you are also ensuring we have communities with more dads, sons, brothers and grandfathers.”

Here I get to talk to Bert Deivert, another modern mandolin master playing blues and roots music, while he enjoys his morning coffee in Sweden. Rich DelGrosso: Modern Mandolin Master [#396]

I'll never forget hearing the sound of Rich DelGrosso's blues mandolin at Byron Bay's Bluesfest in 2007. This was the first time I had heard someone playing live blues mandolin. I had heard it on record before, Johnny Young was the very first, but I had never heard it played live at a concert. As I stood in awe listening to Rich DelGrosso, Mookie Brill and Fiona Boyes' performance at Bluesfest that year I never dreamed I'd have Rich as a special guest on The Blues Room. Nor did I realize that I'd never see another performance featuring blues mandolin as good as that.

Rich is such a wonderful guy whose full of musical experience and talent. Here I interview him from his home in Houston, Texas. What a privilege for me!
