#664 :: LIVE Blues Recording feat: Blues Caravan artists Bernard Allison, Vanja Sky & Mike Zito

"This was no ordinary club tour. This was the Blues Caravan 2018. If you’ve followed Ruf’s rolling revue since it started life in 2005, you’ll already know that these shows are must-see events, throwing together three stellar artists on one bill – then letting the chemistry do the rest.

"Traditionally, the Blues Caravan lineup has showcased the label’s breaking talent – from Aynsley Lister to Samantha Fish – and given fans a chance to catch the blues titans of tomorrow before they go ‘boom’. But in 2018, it’s time to mix things up. On this year’s Blues Caravan, you’ll not only find one young gun with a dazzling career ahead of her, but also two heavyweights with a sky-high reputation. Let’s welcome them to the stage…

This CD / DVD release revives a unique Blues Caravan! A unique live piece to experience the Blues Caravan of 2018 again and again!

The accompanying DVD was recorded on 27.01.2018 at Café Hahn in Koblenz!

Ruf’s tireless dedication to the blues means it hunts far beyond the US and UK for its new signings – and the label has struck gold with Croatian gunslinger Vanja Sky. Channelling the fire and flair of Rory Gallagher, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, this 23-year-old hot-tip has already broken out in her home country and bordering Balkan States. On this CD / DVD she presents songs from her first studio album "Bad Penny". Vanja says, „I’m very excited to play on the Blues Caravan 2018,” she says, “and looking forward to meeting a lot of new people and sharing my music with them. My shows are filled with great energy and I always give everything when I’m on stage. I’m gonna play songs from my debut album, and also some cover songs – so people can definitely expect some great music and fun.”

Some surnames command instant respect on the blues scene. As the son of the mighty Luther Allison – the late Chicago blues titan who was Ruf’s first signing back in 1994 – Bernard Allison has added to the family legend and carved out his own mythology as a world-class songwriter and performer. For this year’s Blues Caravan, he’ll be drawing on an acclaimed back catalogue that includes 1997’s US debut Keepin’ The Blues Alive and 2000’s classic Born With The Blues, and slipping between genres as only a master can. “My show is all about sharing my musical talent and presenting different styles like blues, rock and funk. There’ll be lots of energy, because I feed off of my fans and love interacting with them on and off stage. You can expect a fun time – the Allison way!” says Bernard.

If you’re remotely serious about modern blues, you’ll have followed the twists and turns of Mike Zito’s fascinating career. The Missouri-born bandleader overcame his crippling early addictions to become one of modern America’s sharpest songwriters, and few artists have written with such stark eloquence as he did on 2011’s Greyhound album. In 2012, Mike threw us a curveball, lining up alongside Devon Allman and Cyril Neville as a key member of Royal Southern Brotherhood – and went on to stay with the supergroup for two critically feted albums. But the call of his own muse was too strong, and in 2014, Mike burst straight back into his solo career with Keep Coming Back and Make Blues Not War. “I have long wanted to join the Blues Caravan and run away, so I’m excited,” he says. “My shows are energetic and passionate: I try hard to give everything I’ve got and make every note count. You can expect rocking blues guitar, with a dose of soul vocals, and a mix of my best songs.”

The Blues Room, 11 February 2015
Episode #472

20 years ago, charismatic founder and leader of Ruf Records, Thomas Ruf, created the label simply to give the legendary Chicago bandleader Luther Allison a platform to release some of the best albums of his career. Tragically, Luther himself was lost to cancer in 1997, but Ruf Records never missed a beat, continuing to develop some of the brightest talent in America, Britain, Europe and beyond, while always retaining its fearsomely independent spirit.

Over the next three episodes of The Blues Room we'll bring you personally selected songs from some of the amazing artists that have signed with Ruf Records. We think you're going like this, and if you do, please pay rufrecords.de a visit and just see for yourself the top notch catalog of artists and bands who keep their music true to the Ruf Records motto: When Blues Crosses Over.

The Blues Room # 371 Ruf Records Presents Girls With Guitars In New Zealand

In this episode I interview Thomas Ruf of Ruf Records and Danielle Schnebelen of Girls With Guitars. They are in New Zealand for the first time touring North Island venues. Thanks to Simon of Yellow Eye Music for linking me with these great people. And to Danielle, I am so sorry for pronouncing your surname so wrongly each time!!!! Heres some details about Girls With Guitars:

During the past two years, the popular "Girls with Guitars" tour presented by German Blues label Ruf Records has opened the eyes and turned the heads of music fans all over North America and Europe.

Now it's time for these talented women to bring their high-powered act to the Southern hemisphere.

In 2013 the dynamic trio of Samantha Fish, Danielle Schnebelen and Joanne Shaw Taylor will perform in New Zealand for the first time ever.

Samantha Fish is a Kansas City native, and has anchored the live show since 2011. Her performances have surpassed all the pre-tour hype surrounding this rising star of the blues, whose debut album Runaway triumphed in the Best New Artist Debut category at the 2012 Blues Music Awards in Memphis. Just 23 years old, Fish sings and plays with astounding maturity. She made that clear on Runaway, a convincing blend of blues, boogie, rock and country released in 2011.

Danielle Schnebelen has a voice to raise the hairs on the back of your neck, this left-handed bass player (one-third of Trampled Under Foot – winners of the International Blues Challenge in 2008) is along with Samantha Fish, part of Kansas City's thriving blues scene. Schnebelen received a nomination as Best Bassist at last year's BMAs and has already shared the stage with such luminaries as Koko Taylor, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the Tedeschi-Trucks Band.

Joanne Shaw Taylor is a hard-edged British blues guitar player extraordinaire, debuted on the international scene in 2009 and has released three critically acclaimed CDs. She now resides in Texas and it was there that she perfected her brand of spirited, hard rocking blues on the recently released Almost Always Never. "I started playing little clubs in the UK when I was 14 or 15. But the sound of this album is a better representation of what I always wanted to be as an artist," says Taylor, who recently played lead guitar for Annie Lennox at the Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II. The album, her third for Ruf, has solidified her standing as the shooting star of modern blues.

Oli Brown (Ruf Records) will play Biddy Mulligans, Hamilton

Due to unprecedented demand Oli Brown, the young guitarist that Mojo Magazine described as “The hottest young pistol in British blues”, has announced two further special performances following his gigs at Gtaranaki 2010. They are:
The Ruby Lounge
14 Bond St, Wellington
15th August at 9:00pm

and
Biddy Mulligan’s Back Bar
742 Victoria St
Hamilton
16th August at 8:00pm

Barely out of his teens, Oli Brown is being hailed as the great white hope of British blues, with glowing reviews for his live and recorded work. Uncut magazine describes his guitar-
playing as a cross between Rory Gallagher and Steve Cropper.

Since 2007 the Oli Brown Band has playing up and down the UK. A major highlight for 2007 was recording a live session for BBC Radio 2 for the Paul Jones Blues Show which was
transmitted 14 May 2007. Other notable events that year included supporting acts like Walter Trout, Aynsley Lister, Devon Allman and Ian Parker, as well as performances for
various local radio stations.

YELLOW EYE LTD PRESS RELEASE:BRITISH BLUES SENSATION OLI BROWN ANNOUNCES 2 EXTRA GIGS FOLLOWING HIS APPERANCES AT GTARANAKI 2010
2008 was exciting and extremely busy: In January Oli signed to Ruf Records and went to Germany to record his first Ruf Records album, titled Open Road, released that June to great reviews.

In February 2008, whilst in America, The Oli Brown Band were invited to record at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, by John Fry himself (Ardent Studios have been involved with the recording of albums by artists such as REM, The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, Isaac Hayes, ZZ Top… the list goes on and on). Oli and the band recorded a couple of tracks and then performed a live session for "The Ardent Sessions". The hits on the website for The Oli
Brown Band set exceeded 1.4 million in three weeks.

Oli went back to the States in August 2008, where he performed with Blinddog Smokin, Sherman Robertson, Miss Blues, Billy Branch - and did his own Oli Brown set too!
The Oli Brown Band secured support slots in 2008 with artist such as Jon Cleary, Johnny Winter, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robben Ford, Walter Trout and Devon Allman, as well as having Oli Brown Band headline gigs. All of the gigs saw them playing in larger venues and increasing their rapidly growing fan base.

Early 2009 saw Oli perform as a member of the legendary Blues Caravan Tour of Europe, an annual event put on by Ruf Records which visits many countries including Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, Lithuania and Poland. 2009 was also when The Oli Brown Band carried out their first major UK tour. This was the Open Road Tour, presented by HMV in association with Rhino Agency and was a great success.

The rest of 2009 had the band performing at various festivals both in and out of the UK and ended, following requests from fans, with a further UK tour.
The eagerly awaited follow up to Oli Brown's critically acclaimed debut Open Road is Heads I win, Tails You Lose and features that unique Oli Brown sound; clean guitar, great riffs and a vocal honed by two years of touring that squeezes every emotion from the lyrics. This album was produced by the legendary Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac,
Eric Clapton, Ten Years After), who was keen to come out of retirement to work with the talented Oli after hearing his debut CD. With the blues baton now firmly grasped in Oli's hands, he's just completed his biggest gig yet with two appearances at Glastonbury on 25 and 26 June 2010.
His appearances at one of the world's biggest music festivals cements his place as a rising star and comes in the middle of a hectic 2010 for Oli, who lives at home with his dad and manager Graham, mum Sue and sister Charlotte, 23.
Oli is available for interviews and both his albums can be provided for review.
