During my Christmas holiday in sunny Gisborne (NZ) I had the distinct feeling to get my A into G and put an Etta James spotlight show together. I've been meaning to do this for a few years now. Its strange how things turn out sometimes. I didn't know how bad Etta's recent health condition had become. I knew she was unwell and diagnosed with terminal leukemia but I didn't realise she had declined so rapidly. Then during my holiday I heard she had been released from hospital and was recovering at home. This made me determined to get a spotlight on her music together to play on air as soon as I returned from holiday. This episode is that spotlight.

Unfortunately, Etta passed away yesterday, Friday 20 January 2012. I'm glad I got to play and enjoy her music while she was still alive. I'll continue to play Etta James music now that she has passed but it just won't be the same, it'll be more meaningful.

Let's treasure the 'older' stalwarts of classic blues / soul / R n B / funk etc, for they too, will one day, pass on leaving only memories for us to hold on to.

We love you Etta! Thank you!

Etta James's Son Describes Her Final Moments

Recalling his mother, R&B legend Etta James, and her final moments, son Donto James tells PEOPLE he's happy he and his brother, Sametto, got to hold her in their arms and say goodbye.

"It's been quite a day, Donto, 43, said Friday, the day Etta, 73, died from complications of leukemia, "but I'm very grateful. She basically passed in my arms, and I was able to share everything I needed to say to her, from praying to listing her accomplishments as a mother."

The goodbyes were delivered at a Riverside, Calif. hospital, where Etta James was taken Thursday night. Donto says his mother couldn't speak but seemed to understand what he was telling her.

"I asked her if she heard what I said, and she'd flutter her eyes and look at me very quickly. And she had been nonreactive before that," he says.

Donto describes the moment as "spiritual," and although he'd long dreaded seeing his mother die, he now believes "it was a true gift to be with her when it happened. I wouldn't want it any other way than for her to go in our arms."

He adds, "I told her that I loved her. I said, 'You were a wonderful mother, you did a wonderful job, your seven grandchildren love you, and they will be okay.' "

In a final tribute, he also says, "For sure, the world lost a legend today. I am very proud of her, and very thankful."

2120 South Michigan Avenue, home of Chicago’s Chess Records, may be the most important address in the bloodline of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll. That address – immortalized in the Rolling Stones’ like-named instrumental recorded at an epochal session at Chess in June 1964 and included on the band’s album 12 X 5 – serves as the title to George Thorogood’s electrifying Capitol/EMI salute to the Chess label and its immortal artists.

Thorogood has been essaying the Chess repertoire since his 1977 debut album, which included songs by Elmore James and Bo Diddley that originated on the label. He has cut 18 Chess covers over the years; three appeared on his last studio release, 2009’s The Dirty Dozen.
On 2120 South Michigan Avenue, he offers a full-length homage to the label that bred his style with interpretations of 10 Chess classics. The album also includes original tributes to the Windy City and Chess’ crucial songwriter-producer-bassist Willie Dixon, penned by Thorogood, producer Tom Hambridge, and Richard Fleming, plus a crankedup version of the Stones’ titular instrumental.

Produced by Tom Hambridge, three time Grammy nominee, 2010 Grammy winner the album also includes featured guests Buddy Guy and Charlie Musselwhite, also both 2010 Grammy winners!….this is the album George Thorogood was born to make!

In this episode we are honoured to have in the studio, Hamilton musician, Max MacDonald and his mokopuna Lakeisha along with President of HBS, Tony Kaye. Max talks about his new EP which is out now and Tony fills us in on all the Blues happenings coming up in November, and what a lot of Blues happenings there are coming up too!!! Then I interview Paul Wilson via the phone, Paul is the keyboardist for the Blues Buffet band.

Wanganui based R & B band, The Blues Buffet, incorporates a mix of popular and original compositions, putting on a never-stop, dance party featuring the styles and music of luminaries like Lucky Peterson, Eric Clapton, The Steve Miller Band, The Isley Bros, Johnny Winter, Little Charlie and the Nightcats and The Rolling Stones. They recorded their first CD last year called “Appetiser” with a second in the can.

The band has appeared in Blues, Brews and BBQs in Tauranga, and Jazz and Blues Festivals in Tauranga, Bay of Islands, Church Road, Manawhatu and the Hawkes Bay. Be warned, you won’t sit still when this band hits town.

The Bo-Keys don’t replay the Memphis instrumental tradition. They deliver a hard-hitting and authentic take on the city’s original soul sound. A devotee of Stax instrumental groups like the Mar-Keys and Booker T. & the MG’s, bandleader and bassist Scott Bomar formed the Bo-Keys as homage to the quintessential Memphis sound, yet he clearly has both feet firmly planted in the twenty-first century. The Bo-Keys’ latest recording, Got To Get Back, features several special guests, including Charlie Musselwhite, Otis Clay, and William Bell, just to name a few.

Scott Bomar is a Memphis-based musician, Emmy Award-winning film composer, Grammy-nominated music producer, and recording engineer. Bomar has also gained prominence as a bassist, backing legendary Stax artists such as Rufus and Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Sun Records pioneer Rosco Gordon, and Motown session guitarist Dennis Coffey. Bomar is also the leader of The Bo-Keys, a Memphis soul/funk group featuring former Stax/Volt, Hi Records, and Isaac Hayes session players Skip Pitts, Howard Grimes, and Ben Cauley.

Robert Putignano for BluesWax: How are you doing Scott?

Scott Bomar: Great, good to be here.

BW: The latest Bo-Keys disc is on a new label for you?

SB: Yes, our first album came out on Yellow Dog records around 2004-2005. Since that time I started a studio named Electraphonic. That studio grew into a recording label. The Bo-Keys’ Got To Get Back is the fourth release. I did two for a soul-jazz group named The City Champs, and one single for the Bo-Keys.

BW: Good luck with all of this. You know this isn’t an easy game these days.

SB: It’s hard, but I believe that if you make good music, people will buy it.

BW: Kind of like that baseball movie, build it and they will come. Scott, please give us a little history about your achievements.

SB: I grew up here in Memphis, lived here my entire life, always loved the Memphis sound and Memphis music. I forget the first times I heard Al Green, Booker T. & the MG’s, the Bar-Kays, and other Memphis bands, and when I heard Otis Redding on the radio, he had a huge impact on me. When I got older and played with more and more musicians, I got to work in the studios in Memphis and got to know those guys that were involved with those classic recordings from Stax and Hi Records. Eventually, I got work with them and backed up William Bell, Eddie Floyd, and Carla and Rufus Thomas. As I got to play with all these great artists, I just soaked it all up.

BW: How old are you Scott?

SB: Thirty-seven.

BW: Wow! So this music preceded you by several decades. Plus, what’s more impressive, is how you are able to turn it back out in truly fine fashion, yet modernizing the music to sound contemporary.

SB: Thanks, but that sound never really went away, especially here in Memphis. Besides you can go around the world and still hear Al Green and Otis Redding on the radio. I just decided to study the roots of Memphis music. That eventually lead to putting together this current album, plus having several of the originators join the Bo-Keys and perform on the album was a real thrill for me.

BW: I had the pleasure of getting to talk with Booker T. a few weeks ago and mentioned the Bo-Keys name, and he said these guys get it.

SB: Wow; that means a lot to me, especially coming from Booker.

BW: You’ve got that right. He also has a lot of respect and wants to continue to preserve and expand that Memphis sound. So how did this particular Bo-Keys project get underway?

SB: It all started when I had a group in the mid 1990s called Impala. We were an all-instrumental band. We did kind of soundtrack recordings that sounded like Booker T.- surf-type music.

BW: Booker T. surf music?

SB: Yeah, we also mixed in some Freddie King sounds, like those early instrumental albums he did. We tried to have that kind of sound too. We toured a lot, had a couple of albums, but we ended up breaking up. Before the breakup we headed into a more soul direction, so the Bo-Keys became born to continue the sound we were working on.

Around this same time I started working at the Stax Music Academy, which were the original Stax studios and offices. When they were building the academy they had a summer music camp where they hired a lot of the original Stax session players to teach the kids. Somehow they threw me into this mix, so that’s how I met Skip Pitts. The first day that I go there to teach the kids, I see this guy plug into a wah-wah, and the first two seconds I hear him play, I knew exactly that it was Pitts and said to myself this is the guy who played guitar on Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft.”

I had heard Pitts name for years, but never met him or heard him play live. We had a different band lineup then, but some of the band members had conflicts playing in other bands. I wanted to keep as many of the originators of the Memphis sound in my band, and that’s where we are now. So as the Bo-Keys, we’ve been doing this for about ten years.

BW: I guess this was all meant to be for you, starting with the Impala band, onto the Stax summer camp, and now the Bo-Keys.

SB: It’s been a dream come true for me, Bob, it’s also been a lot fun doing a lot of projects like Cyndi Lauper’s Memphis Blues. We were also in the film Soul Men, with three of our songs on the soundtrack for that.

BW: You either know how to work the band well for projects like this or have someone working it well for you.

SB: We’ve just been very blessed. We have some great friends, we all like to work, and we never say no to anything.

BP: How did you get Otis Clay to record with you?

SB: Through our drummer, Howard Grimes, and the songwriter Darrell Carter, who co-wrote with Bobby Womack. He also was a staff writer at Hi Records, so he wrote a lot of stuff with Willie Mitchell for Otis Clay. Darrell co-wrote “Got to Get Back” and told me that the perfect guy to sing this song was Otis Clay. So I called him, told him about the song, and he was hooked, saying this is the song for me!

Otis Clay is a very special guy, one of the nicest guys in the whole world. He’s also one of the most professional artists out there. There’s not a lot great soul singers out there anymore, but Otis is one of them. We’ve lost so many blues soul singers, and we’re fortunate to have Otis with us.

BW: And it doesn’t look like he’s going away anytime soon. He looks fabulous and sounds great, too! By the way, Otis Clay and his band sang “Got to Get Back” at the Pennsyvania Blues Fest last weekend, and they nailed it!

SB: Alright! He sounds as good if not better than he did forty years ago. When he came to record with us we nailed the song down in the second take, and we did it all live. The experience was like being vaulted back in a time machine for me as I imagined what it might have been like recording back at Stax or Hi in the ’60s. It also helped that Howard Grimes and Otis worked together so many times before, so they locked in with each-other.

BW: So now I know why you named your new disc Got to Get Back, you certainly know how to capture and enhance that classic Memphis sound. By the way, the instrumentals on the CD really worked extremely well for me, but I have to tell you that at a very young age listening to AM radio I always gravitated to instrumental music.

SB: It was a great sound to hear on the dial, and I can understand how that worked for you. Before I forget, I wanted to let your WFDU listeners and BluesWax readers know that we are going on the road and will be at Joe’s Pub in New York City on Monday October 17th.

I remember seeing the Music Maker Blues Revue at Byron Bay Bluesfest and absolutely loved them. TRhe line up has changed since then but the fell, the soul and the downhome blues they played has not. One things for sure, if you don't feel what this band or what the Music Make Relief Fund are doing for a) Musician Sustenance - grants to meet basic life needs and emergency relief; b) Musical Development - grants and services for recipient artist professional development and career advancement, and c) Cultural Access - supports the preservation and proliferation of American musical traditions, then yes, you just may have a hole in your soul.

The music featured in this episode reaches a major landmark for MMRF and it occurred when they embarked on their most ambitious Music Maker Revue European tour to date. Seven MMBR artists, including Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen, Pat Wilder, Albert White, Eddie Tigner, Nashid Abdul, Dr. Burt, Ardie Dean and Alabama Slim, traveled across Europe, performing five shows a week for five weeks to spread their talent and dedication to music. Born and raised in the working class town of, Ypsilanti, in southeast Michigan, Samantha Gray is a singer, songwriter and visual artist who began her creative journey at a very early age. Although she was raised in the mid-west, Samantha's father and maternal grandparents were from Tennessee. She really embraced her southern roots and has often said that she had the best of both worlds. Samantha was exposed to many different types of music, especially country music and the sounds of Motown.

Samantha's unique voice has been described as soulful, sultry and powerful. Also known for her vintage style and hip shaking performances, she really knows how to engage her audience. Melding the influences of Classic R&B, Blues and Rock'n'Roll, she combines all of these influences into her own brand of Blues and Roots music, which can be heard on her 2010 self-released debut album "Bad Girl Now."

About Human Instinct

Incredibly, Human Instinct has been entertaining us over four decades. A band with a reputation for their explosive live performances and for the radical rock they have recorded on seven albums and nearly 30 singles. They have played alongside the giants of British rock and have been described by the music critics as legendary heavyweights of NZ rock.

Sensational lead vocalist and stand-up drummer Maurice Greer remains the heart of Human Instinct and he’s travelled a long road since the late 60s when he was propelled into the limelight as the “teenage wonder drummer”. Inevitably the line-up has changed with the times under his charismatic leadership and has been a vehicle for many of New Zealand’s top musicians.Human Instinct’s sound, a melting pot of heavy psychedelic and blues rock, is absolutely their own. New Music from Urshla George

I’m Drivin’ is the second release of blues/roots act Ursula George, of Providence, Rhode Island. It features a collection of female-penned blues tunes of the classic era, as well as a few surprise renditions of the later-day. Receiving particular attention is "You Need (a Whole Lotta) Love," a modern interpretation of the Willie Dixon tune later covered by Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin, now reimagined with a twist.

She discovered the blues in her teens, and since then her life has been a mission to support and promote blues music, and in particular the female songwriters of the Vaudeville and Classic Blues eras. Her first release - Ursula George, "Blue Basics" (Tommytiger 1999) - met with critical acclaim, and made the rotation of radio stations worldwide, including popular syndicated shows like Acoustic Café, and satellite radio.

Drummer Marty Richards is well known to the New England music scene. A Berklee grad, he began his jazz career with the Gary Burton Quintet, segued into blues, playing with many of the genres finest acts, including Duke Robillard, John Hammond, Kim Wilson and the Blues Brothers, and most recently has taken the drum chair for top rock acts including the J. Geils Band and the Joe Perry Project. He has appeared on more than 100 recordings, but this is the first recording of Marty on piano as well as drums.

Carlos del Junco talks Harmonica

Playing a ten hole diatonic harmonica, Carlos has developed the unique ability to play chromatically by using a recently developed "overblow" technique taught to him by jazz virtuoso Howard Levy. Overall, this approach to the diatonic harmonica, although much more difficult to achieve, is in many ways more expressive and communicative than the mechanized tone produced by the chromatic harmonica . Carlos is one of the few pioneers of this overblow method, bringing musical credibility to what has still been considered by many in the music industry - a fringe folk instrument. The sophisticated sound produced by del Junco is at once sensitive, soulful, and sexy while never forgetting the rawness inherent in blues music.

The first time I learnt about Carlos was by google searching for Ska tunes that featured harmonica. His album Big Boy showed up as it features a great ska tune with his harmonica playing called Heddon Tadpolly Spook.

Alan Black - Backbeat Frontman

Club-goers in Peterborough, Canada, know that they’re in for some great music if Alan
Black is in the house. For years he’s been the backbeat of the best blues, R&B and rock
bands in this hip university town, notably Jackson Delta, Buzz Thompson, and Max
Mouse and the Gorillas. Alan wows audiences with his ability to play drums and
harmonica simultaneously and soulfully. Fans appreciate his heartfelt singing and
songwriting and know that he has appeared at every major Canadian festival, been
nominated for two Junos, and toured Scandinavia and the UK with the likes of Tracy
Nelson and Mose Scarlett.

These days, it’s easiest to catch this talented guy on stage in Al Black and the Steady
Band, which offers up New Orleans funk and echoes of the early blues masters. With a
rhythm section that includes Black on the drum kit, Andy Pryde on bass and Rob Steele on
hand drums, the groove is hypnotic. Together with Gary Peeples on guitar, this core band
weaves Rock 'n' Roll and Caribbean rhythms together in songs that can bring to mind The
Meters and Little Feat.

Alan Black was brought up surrounded by jazz, big band and country music. The Blacks
regularly hosted weekend house parties where country songs were banged out on an old
guitar, old standards were sung, parents danced around the living room. His father (a
drummer who adored Gene Krupa) took Al to drum rehearsals with his pipe band and the
eager student played every piece of furniture at home until allowed to practice on his dad’s
drum kit.

As a 12-year-old, Alan saw Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee on TV, bought a harmonica
and started practicing along with Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones records. By the time he
was in high school he was playing house parties, doing songs by heroes like the
Yardbirds and James Brown. At 19, he was playing drums in a blues band that eventually
backed legendary piano player Sunnyland Slim. As co-founder of Jackson Delta, Alan did
much to shape the sound, playing blues rhythms on his vintage drum kit and traditional-
yet-innovative blues harp, and singing - often on the same song! This acoustic blues trio
garnered two Juno nominations, was runner-up for the BB King Lucille Award at the
prestigious Handy Awards, toured North America and Britain and opened for John Lee
Hooker, releasing several albums along the way.

For decades now, Alan Black has been the backbeat of Peterborough in bands like
Stonebridge Blues Band, Rocket 88s, and Bobcajun. International audiences have heard
him with Colleen Peterson, Larry Garner, Pinetop Perkins, Gene Taylor and many others.

American Blues legend to headline Rotorua Blues Festival

Los Angeles Blues legend Doug MacLeod will headline the Rotorua Blues Festival in June this year (1-6 June 2011).

Doug is the patron of the Bay of Plenty Blues Club and will perform exclusively in Rotorua during this trip, giving the city a fantastic chance to attract local, domestic and Australian visitors.
This year’s festival will also feature musicians from across New Zealand and Australia. The event, which has been running since 2006, coincides with the annual Targa Car rally in Rotorua and the usual ‘Targa Streat Party’ will be held during the popular ‘Show n Shine’ on Saturday 4th June, which showcases the rally cars.

A number of bars and restaurants within Rotorua’s CBD will be host to a variety of Blues acts for people to enjoy throughout the four days. All are within walking distance of each other and entry to these venues is free.

Included in the six-day long music programme will be a special concert on Saturday night 4th June at the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside, featuring festival headliner Doug MacLeod. This is a rare opportunity to see one of the world’s greatest blues masters, and will be MacLeod’s only formal concert on his tour ‘down under’.

Acknowledged as a torchbearer of the acoustic blues, Doug MacLeod is one of the last remaining bluesmen who learned from the old masters. He is highly respected for his superb songwriting, and several of his songs have been covered by many artistes including Albert King, Albert Collins and Coco Montoya.

MacLeod is also a great storyteller, who enthralls his audience with the tales that have inspired his songs. He is renowned for his finger-picking and bottleneck guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals and wit, which combine to produce an unforgettable live performance. In the words of Delta Blues legend, Honeyboy Edwards, “Doug MacLeod, now there’s a man that can really play the blues.”

A feature of the festival will be an exclusive Songwriting workshop on Sunday 5th June with Doug MacLeod. Places will be limited and are expected to fill quickly.
The ‘Youth Guitar Workshop & Competition’, is open to entrants aged between 12 and 20, it is again expected to be hotly contested by a number of aspiring young players. “It is an opportunity for the stars of tomorrow to show us what they can do today”, says Sally Garner, Festival Organiser. The workshop and competition will run across the weekend at the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside, and feature a master class with Doug MacLeod.
The popular ‘Blues Cruise’ will run on Sunday 5th June, on board Rotorua’s own paddle-steamer The Lakeland Queen, which is modeled on the Mississippi river boats. Ticket price includes nibbles and a glass of wine on boarding.

Its been awhile since I got on air and just played real good blues that I am really fond of.

This episode kinda marks the place where I spin blues that I really REALLY enjoy.

Thats not to say I haven't REALLY enjoyed what I've played up to this point, it just means

GRASSROOTS FESTIVAL CANCELLED

Chugg Entertainment today announces with great disappointment, that the inaugural GrassRoots Festival scheduled for two days over the Easter weekend; Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th April, will regrettably be cancelled.

Since the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch, and the consequential standstill with which the entire country has come to, the very difficult decision has been made to cancel the event. We do not feel right seeking real media coverage for the festival while the country is so affected by this terrible disaster..

In its first year, promoters felt it vital to preserve the brand for future opportunities and do not wish to see the high calibre of acts playing to a crowd any smaller than they deserve, due to unfortunate timing and circumstance.

At a time when several other major tours are cancelling around New Zealand, we feel it important to try and give people space to deal with the most urgent issues at hand and recover.

Patrons are asked to return to their point of purchase to receive a full refund.

GrassRoots upholds a firm belief in environment and appreciates the power but also the futility of music in the face of true adversity. We endeavour to return in 2012 at a time when recovery and revival are in full swing and the country is back on its feet.

In the meantime, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this fateful disaster.

MIKE GARNER
Mike Garner is an accomplished singer/musicain/songwriter who has lived in New Zealand from 1987, and is heavily involved in the New Zealand blues scene. Mike works solo, as a duo, trio, or full band and gigs extensively throughout New Zealand. He will perform a solo set for Rotunda Blues.

VALVED
Based around Father and Son John and Casey Messent, VALVED will be made up of a mixture of seasoned musicians and the next generation of musical talent.

Wellington 5-piece The Thomas Oliver Band have spent the past few years touring and playing live throughout New Zealand with the likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop, Gin Wigmore and Britain’s Oli Brown. Within this time the band have also written and recorded their debut full-length album ‘Baby, I’ll Play’ to be released in early 2011.

“From the sexy, dirty blues/rock of ‘Nothing Left’ and ‘In My Bones’ to the glorious, perfect-pop balladry of ‘A Letter’, Every Penny is flawless. This is just the beginning. If you do not know who they are, watch this space: they are simply too good to stay underground for much longer.” - M2 Magazine

Initially a 3-piece, The Thomas Oliver Band grew into it’s current form following the release of ‘Every Penny’ thanks to the lifelong friendships crafted while the five boys studied at the New Zealand School of Music. It is the fresh instrumentation of the 5-piece, including lap-slide guitar, double bass and baritone saxophone, which creates The Thomas Oliver Band's distinctive sound. The new album is “more organic, earthier and rich”, says Oliver, “and the step from 3-piece to 5-piece has completely opened up our sound, and allowed a lot more creative expression for us, and particularly for me as the writer.”

The Thomas Oliver Band have created a staunch following through their live performances. It was their stage show which saw them selected by the New Zealand Campus Arts Network as the Emerging Artist of the year to complete a full national tour in 2009. They have gone on to play at some of Aotearoa's renowned festivals and joined the bill with our country's top acts. 2011 follows this trend with The Thomas Oliver Band named in some of the best summer series including Wellington's Garden Magic, Auckland's Zoo Music, and A Day on the Green with legends Joe Cocker and George Thorogood.

I loved seeing Bo perform at BluesFest in 2007, he was a highlight of the fest for me and playing a tune of his record to start this episode was a highlight for the show for me.

Hey yeah, I play an unlikely tune to end the show by Toots and the Maytals, a very bluesy one of his latest album. Toots and the Maytals are a featured band at BluesFest Byron Bay in 2011, I so wish they would come to GrassRoots Festival in New Zealand over Easter 2011, that's where I'll be. Enjoy.

INAUGURAL GRASSROOTS FESTIVAL CONFIRMED FOR EASTER 2011

Chugg Entertainment today announces that, in alignment with the wealth of talent visiting Australia for the Easter blues season, New Zealand’s Puhinui Peninsula will also become a melodious playground as the first ever GrassRoots event kicks off for two days on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th April, 2011 at the stunning Puhinui Reserve.

The two-day festival will bring together some of the world’s most renowned artists as well as a raft of local acts across a multitude of genres whilst still having its core ethos firmly grounded in blues and roots based music. R&B legend Solomon Burke, considered by many to be the greatest soul singer of his generation, passed away on Sunday morning, October 10, 2010 of natural causes. Burke was 70 years old and en route from Los Angeles to Amsterdam for a sold out performance.

Signing with Atlantic Records in 1960, Burke recorded a string of Top Ten R&B chart hits, and helped write the book for modern soul with hit songs like "Cry To Me," "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," "If You Need Me," and "Tonight's The Night."

Burke released his latest album, Nothing's Impossible, in early 2010. Recorded in Memphis with the legendary producer Willie Mitchell (known for his work with Al Green), the album won Burke universal critical acclaim. The patriarch of a large extended family, Burke is survived by 21 children, 90 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. LIVE NATION is pleased to announce that STING will extend his critically-acclaimed world tour, Symphonicity, to Australia and New Zealand in January and February, 2011.

The Australian tour will begin January 22 in Perth (Sandalford Estate) followed by performances in the Barossa Valley and Melbourne (Music Bowl), with an additional two-night engagement at the renowned Sydney Opera House. The tour will also make stops at the Hope Estate Winery in Hunter Valley and the Brisbane River Stage before continuing to New Zealand, where Sting will perform at the CBS Canterbury Arena in Christchurch, before concluding at the already sold-out Mission Estate Winery, on February 12 in Napier Valley.

Following sold-out performances throughout North America and Europe, Symphonicity finds Sting performing his greatest hits, re-imagined for symphonic arrangement, conducted by Maestro Steven Mercurio (Pavarotti, Bocelli). For this portion of the tour, Symphonicity will feature the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Perth, Barossa Valley and Melbourne, the Sydney Symphony in Sydney, Brisbane and Hunter Valley, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra performing in Christchurch and Napier, NZ.

Sting will also be joined by a group of accomplished musicians, comprised of Dominic Miller (Sting’s longtime guitarist), Rhani Krija (Sting’s longtime multi-genre percussionist), David Cossin (a multi-percussion specialist in new and experimental music and featured member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars), Jo Lawry (Australian vocalist) and Ira Coleman (bassist).

“I am looking forward to performing in Australia and New Zealand, having a whole new palate of musical colors to work with and reinventing the songs that have been the staples of my live shows for over thirty years,” says Sting.

Drawing from a diverse and illustrious career that has produced numerous multi-platinum albums, a staggering list of number one songs, countless accolades and worldwide record sales of nearly 100 million, Sting’s most celebrated songs have been re-interpreted with brand new orchestrations arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, David Hartley, Michel Legrand, Rob Mathes, Vince Mendoza, Steven Mercurio, Bill Ross, Robert Sadin, and Nicola Tescari.

Third album by Charles 'Big Daddy' Stallings 'Blues Party' lives up to its name without a doubt! Born in Columbia, South Carolina, and getting raised on a farm in Hobbsville, North Carolina, Big Daddy was honing his guitar playing and vocals from an early age by first learning Big Boss Man by Jimmy Reed. He has since released outstanding albums of 'good time blues with a twist' and shared the stage with The Holmes Brothers, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Mark Hummel and Candye Kane to name a few.

There’s obvious influences from some of the greats like BB King, James Brown, and Muddy Waters here but what I like most is Big Daddy’s own personality and great sense of humour that shines through on songs like Old Folks, and Doggone Shame. Blues Party gets 4 out of 5 thumbs up from me. Good time blues with a twist!

Blue September Showdown! Vilagrad Winery 2010. A fundraiser organised by blues guitarist Darcy Perry, who gathered an impressive lineup of blues and roots musicians all donating their time to raise awareness for prostate cancer. It was a full house with guests all painting their faces blue for the evening in support of the cause.

Blue September is the annual awareness campaign launched by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand to draw attention to prostate cancer in New Zealand - one of the biggest killers of New Zealand men. It is estimated that at least half of the 600 annual deaths from prostate cancer could have been prevented had the cancer been diagnosed and treated early enough.

Spokesperson for Blue September, Darcy Perry, said, "Men are dying quietly in New Zealand. Cancer took the lives of both my dad and my father in-law. Men need to start taking action, talking to their doctors and taking better care of their health." Mr Perry said that he hoped if anything was to come out of the evening, it would be that it would result in a man somewhere having his life saved through early detection.

The line-up for the evening was diverse, from solo acoustic acts to lively electric blues bands, with every person appearing on stage painting their face blue to support prostate cancer awareness. Artists included Darcy Perry, Regan, Pete Fountain, Ashley Knox, Rachel Hope, Faith Miru, The Flaming Mudcats, The Gunsmiths, Andre Ngapo, Three's A Crowd, and Nate Taiapa.

Barely out of his teens, Oli Brown is being hailed as the great white hope of British blues, with glowing reviews for his live and recorded work. Uncut magazine describes his guitar-
playing as a cross between Rory Gallagher and Steve Cropper.

Since 2007 the Oli Brown Band has playing up and down the UK. A major highlight for 2007 was recording a live session for BBC Radio 2 for the Paul Jones Blues Show which was
transmitted 14 May 2007. Other notable events that year included supporting acts like Walter Trout, Aynsley Lister, Devon Allman and Ian Parker, as well as performances for
various local radio stations.

2008 was exciting and extremely busy: In January Oli signed to Ruf Records and went to Germany to record his first Ruf Records album, titled Open Road, released that June to great reviews.

In February 2008, whilst in America, The Oli Brown Band were invited to record at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, by John Fry himself (Ardent Studios have been involved with the recording of albums by artists such as REM, The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, Isaac Hayes, ZZ Top… the list goes on and on). Oli and the band recorded a couple of tracks and then performed a live session for "The Ardent Sessions". The hits on the website for The Oli
Brown Band set exceeded 1.4 million in three weeks.

Oli went back to the States in August 2008, where he performed with Blinddog Smokin, Sherman Robertson, Miss Blues, Billy Branch - and did his own Oli Brown set too!
The Oli Brown Band secured support slots in 2008 with artist such as Jon Cleary, Johnny Winter, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robben Ford, Walter Trout and Devon Allman, as well as having Oli Brown Band headline gigs. All of the gigs saw them playing in larger venues and increasing their rapidly growing fan base.

Early 2009 saw Oli perform as a member of the legendary Blues Caravan Tour of Europe, an annual event put on by Ruf Records which visits many countries including Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, Lithuania and Poland. 2009 was also when The Oli Brown Band carried out their first major UK tour. This was the Open Road Tour, presented by HMV in association with Rhino Agency and was a great success.

The rest of 2009 had the band performing at various festivals both in and out of the UK and ended, following requests from fans, with a further UK tour.
The eagerly awaited follow up to Oli Brown's critically acclaimed debut Open Road is Heads I win, Tails You Lose and features that unique Oli Brown sound; clean guitar, great riffs and a vocal honed by two years of touring that squeezes every emotion from the lyrics. This album was produced by the legendary Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac,
Eric Clapton, Ten Years After), who was keen to come out of retirement to work with the talented Oli after hearing his debut CD. With the blues baton now firmly grasped in Oli's hands, he's just completed his biggest gig yet with two appearances at Glastonbury on 25 and 26 June 2010.

His appearances at one of the world's biggest music festivals cements his place as a rising star and comes in the middle of a hectic 2010 for Oli, who lives at home with his dad and manager Graham, mum Sue and sister Charlotte, 23.
